What Is a Standing Frame?

If you’re caring for someone who has limited mobility, a doctor or physical therapist may recommend a standing frame. Here are the basics on standing frames, why they’re important, and what you should look for in a great standing frame.

What Is a Standing Frame?

A standing frame is a positioning device designed to support people who cannot stand on their own. By providing the physical support that a patient needs, a standing frame allows the patient to reap the many benefits of standing without requiring the ongoing assistance of a caregiver.

Standing frames are available in different designs, some providing more intense support than others.

Why Standing Frames Are Important

Sitting too much, even when we’re forced to sit because of an injury or disability, can cause many health issues. The prolonged use of a wheelchair can cause a patient to lose bone density and range of motion, experience decreased circulation and respiratory function, and even experience decreased bowel function. The act of sitting in a wheelchair can also increase a patient’s risk of developing pressure ulcers, and the potential resulting infections can be serious and painful.

When a patient is able to stand, they experience both physical and emotional benefits. Some of the physical benefits include pressure ulcer and osteoporosis prevention, increased range of motion, improved circulation and motor skills, increased upper body strength, and even pain alleviation. There are countless benefits; these are just a few.

Whereas the physical benefits of standing are certainly important, being able to stand also results in significant psychological benefits. Just a few of these psychological benefits include increased self esteem, activity levels, and activeness; depression and mood disorder prevention; improved inclusion in activities and workplaces; and even the improved ability to make eye contact with friends, coworkers, and family.

What to Look for in a Standing Frame

As you shop for a standing frame, look for one which is designed to maximize the patient’s comfort. Some standing frames use straps and slings, while others use devices like foot plates and knee pads to help keep the patient secure. The exact design that is best for a patient will depends on the patient’s needs.

As you look at standing frames, a good fit for the patient is essential. You’ll find that some frames are more adjustable than others, and the more adjustable a frame is, the better it can be customized to maximize a patient’s comfort.

Some standing frames, like the Evolv Adult Glider, allows patients to use both their upper and lower bodies, rather than just relying on the upper body. This design can provide patients with excellent strength building for the whole body.
